Four doctors have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from six months to three years after proven guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of a woman during a liposuction surgery.

The Amman Magistrate Court sentenced a surgeon to three years in prison, a second surgeon and an anesthesiologist to one year each, and another anesthesiologist to six months, all of which will be subject to appeal before a higher court.

The court determined, based on the evidence presented and the testimony of the parties involved, that the woman was admitted to the hospital to have scar revision surgery and liposuction, but ended up undergoing additional procedures while in the operating room.

The court also found that the surgeon who operated on the victim was not a plastic surgeon, yet spent more than three hours in a regular operating room performing liposuction and other major surgeries that would normally require an intensive-care operating theater.

According to the verdict, the defendants failed to stop the surgery when the victim's condition worsened during the procedure and did not provide proper autologous transfusion management.

According to a report presented to the court by the Ministry of Health, the victim's condition deteriorated during a lengthy operation, and the attending physicians did not act quickly enough to save her life.

The report also indicated that the surgery was performed in a setting that was not equipped for the kind of operations that were performed.

According to the ruling, one of the doctors operating on the victim also performed surgery on other patients at the same time, and continued to operate on the victim despite a serious drop in her vital signs.

Public Prosecution witnesses testified that the chief surgeon removed seven liters of fat during the operation, when the recommended amount is three to four liters.

They disclosed that the victim underwent 12 hours of surgery, with the attending physician spending no more than an hour in the operating room at a time.
