The Legal Committee in the Senate has granted approval for the revised version of the Cybercrime Law for the year 2023, as stated by the House of Representatives.

The approval followed a series of necessary amendments made to the draft.

The committee's decision was reached during a meeting held Sunday, presided over by Acting Speaker of the Senate, Samir Al-Rifai.

The gathering was attended by the head of the Legal Committee in the Senate Ahmed Tbeishat.

With this endorsement, the Cybercrime Law is now one step closer to being implemented and enforced.

Thursday, the Lower House of Parliament approved the cybercrime draft law for the year 2023.

During a legislative session to discuss the draft law last week, Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh sought to defend the Cybercrime draft law, saying that it should not clash with the freedoms enshrined in the constitution.

Before the Senate approved the draft, a number of revisions were made including reducing the financial penalty originally set at JD 25,000-50,000 to JD 5,000-20,000.

According to Tbeishat, approximately 90 percent of the articles within the draft law underwent an important change, including the replacement of the conjunction "and" with "or," granting the presiding judges the flexibility to choose between one or both penalties depending on the specifics of each case.

Notably, the proposed draft law has sparked considerable controversy both within the parliament and among the general public in Jordan.
