The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which are set to hold their annual meetings in Marrakech next month, have extended their support to Morocco following the recent tragic earthquake.

Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF said on X: “I am deeply saddened to hear about the devastating earthquake that has struck Morocco. My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they cope with this tragedy, and to those on the frontline of rescue efforts.”

The death toll following the Morocco Earthquake reached 1,037 and at least 1,204 people were injured, the Interior Ministry announced.

A powerful earthquake shook Morocco Friday leading to terrified residents fleeing their homes in the middle of the night.

The preliminary government count initially stood at 296 people and 153 people were said to be injured, as announced by the ministry.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck 72 kilometers southwest of tourist hotspot Marrakesh at 11:11 pm, the US Geological Survey reported.

Strong tremors were also felt in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira.
