Recent heavy rains in southern Brazil have led to an increase in the death toll from floods in the region.

Brazilian authorities have reported that catastrophic floods and landslides have claimed the lives of 29 people, with at least 60 individuals still missing.

In Rio Grande do Sul state, where President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has pledged government assistance, the damage is extensive, ranging from massive landslides to submerged homes and cars. Rescue efforts are underway in challenging and risky conditions.

Governor Eduardo Leyte described this as the worst climate disaster ever to hit the state, which shares borders with Uruguay and Argentina. He expressed deep regret for the lives lost, with 29 fatalities confirmed and expectations of more casualties, especially given the 60 people still missing.

An earlier report from authorities on Wednesday had stated 10 deaths and 21 missing persons.

At the end of March, heavy rains in southeastern Brazil claimed the lives of 25 people in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states.
