Queen Rania of Jordan highlighted the global impact of the "Israeli" war on Gaza, pointing out that it has revealed deep divisions and created new lines of confrontation, contributing to increased global polarization.
Speaking at a dialogue session hosted by journalist Ali Velshi at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles on Monday, Her Majesty emphasized that the only way to achieve security in our region is through peace, where Palestinians do not just receive promises of statehood, but an actual state. She added, "There can't be a safe Israel as long as severe injustice continues at its borders."
She shed light on the division and "selective empathy," stating that people feel forced to choose sides, leading to a shrinking middle ground year after year.
Regarding Palestinians, she stated that they have been pushed to the margins, where their suffering has become almost invisible, and they have become a people who can be wronged without consequences. Therefore, it's important for us to find that middle ground.
Her Majesty spoke about civilian casualties, noting that this war has killed more doctors, relief workers, and journalists than any other conflict. It has claimed the lives of 14,500 children. Regardless of whether Israel's actions are labeled genocide or not, many people are dying, and the fact that we're debating the terminology itself is shocking.
She pointed out the anger in the world on October 7, but questioned why there isn't the same anger about the number of people being killed now. She emphasized the importance of giving equal value to human life and condemning human rights violations equally. You can't achieve credibility without adhering to ethical principles.
She added that what Palestinians want isn't sympathy or special treatment; they want neutral application of the law.
Regarding the mockery when discussing the two-state solution and claiming this conflict is unsolvable, Her Majesty said this conflict might be the most challenging in our era. Not because we don't know what needs to be done, but because of the lack of seriousness, commitment, and political will to accomplish it.
