The United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly for a recommendation to “reconsider favorably” the matter of Palestine’s membership, a decision that carries symbolic significance due to the American veto in the Security Council.

“The UN General Assembly determines that the State of Palestine is qualified and should be admitted as a member to the United Nations,” The United Nations said on its “X” account.

The resolution, which states that Palestinians should join and be granted additional rights as an observer state, received support from 143 members, with 9 members objecting and 25 abstentions.

The United Nations General Assembly recommended that the Security Council reconsider Palestine’s membership positively, highlighting that Palestinians are eligible for full membership in the organization.
