A total of 53 individuals were arrested across Jordan for begging for money, according to the Anti-Vagrancy Department at the Ministry of Social Development Friday.
The media spokesperson at the ministry Ashraf Khreis said the department carried out a campaign focused on mosques and markets in an attempt to end the phenomenon of begging.
All those arrested were referred to the judiciary, he added.
Khreis noted that people who beg for money play on people's emotions in many ways, urging them not to sympathize with them, according to the Jordan News Agency Petra.
He explained that according to their studies most individuals who are caught begging for money are in good health and are able to work.
