A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Afghanistan Thursday, and was felt by residents in Kabul extending all the way to Islamabad, Pakistan.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake had its epicenter in the Jorm area of Badakhshan province, situated in the Hindu Kush mountain region.
No reports of damages or injuries have been received yet.
The earthquake struck at a depth of approximately 200 kilometers around 14:00 local time (09:30 GMT) and was felt by residents in Kabul, located about 300 kilometers from Jorm.
Afghanistan experiences frequent earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, near the convergence point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
In Oct. 2023, a series of earthquakes ranging from 4.2 to 6.3 magnitudes struck western Afghanistan, resulting in the death of around a thousand people.
The most powerful earthquake in Afghanistan in recent years occurred in 1998, hitting the provinces of Takhar and Badakhshan in the northeast, resulting in the death of 5,000 people.
