Donald Trump succeeded in winning the Republican Party primary in South Carolina on Saturday evening, defeating his rival Nikki Haley, his last Republican competitor, bringing him one step closer to securing the party's nomination for the presidency in 2024.

This victory represents a setback for Haley, who represents the more moderate wing of the Republican Party, especially as the elections were held in the state she governed for six years.

In his first statement after the victory, and as a sign of no longer seeing Haley as a threat, Trump addressed President Biden. 

“We’re going to be up here on November 5, and we’re going to look at Joe Biden, and we’re gonna look him right in the eye,” Trump said as the crown loudly cheered him on. “He’s destroying our country and we’re gonna say ‘Joe, you’re fired. Get out. Get out, Joe. You’re fired.’”

American media outlets predicted Trump's victory shortly after the polling stations closed, as he garnered around 60 percent of the votes with a significant margin, according to the counting of over 85 percent of the votes.

Despite her defeat, Haley announced her determination to remain in the race to secure the Republican Party's nomination for the US presidential elections. Speaking at a gathering in Charleston, she stated,"I'm not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden."

On the other hand, Trump faces four criminal indictments, and political expert Julian Zelizer believes that Haley remains in the race due to the possibility of Trump's conviction. Her only hope, he says, is to hold out long enough until the trial is concluded.

In his commentary on the results, Biden warned of the threat posed by Trump to the country's future, while Trump pledged to demonstrate Republican strength in the presidential elections.
