Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, following the United States usage of its veto right in the United Nations Security Council to block the full membership of Palestine, said that his country will “reconsider” its bilateral relations with Washington.

In statements made to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), Abbas described the American veto as a “disappointing, regrettable, shameful, irresponsible, and unjustifiable stance” adding that it constitutes a blatant aggression against the rights of Palestinians and a challenge to the will of the international community.

Abbas held the Biden Administration fully responsible for the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, emphasizing that it will only stabilize with a just solution to the Palestinian Cause.

“We will not remain hostages to these failed policies that have been exposed to the entire world,” the Palestinian President said, adding that his government will “devise a new strategy to protect the independent Palestinian national decision-making and proceed according to a Palestinian agenda, not an American vision or regional agendas.”

The decision to reconsider ties with the US seeks to ensure the protection of the interests of the Palestinian people, their cause, and their rights, Abbas continued.

“The current US administration has not only backtracked on its promises and commitments but has allowed Israel to undermine the Palestinian national authority, and violated all international laws and reneged on all promises regarding a two-state solution and achieving peace in the region,” President Abbas said to WAFA.
