The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Smith on Wednesday confirmed that Jamaica officially recognized the State of Palestine.

This decision was announced following a Cabinet session, reflecting Jamaica's commitment to the pursuit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among nations.

Minister Smith emphasized the urgency of adopting a two-state solution as the only viable resolution to the prolonged occupation of Palestine, according to official statements.

Smith also highlighted Jamaica's deep concerns over the ongoing war on Gaza and the escalating humanitarian crisis calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The Jamaican government also expressed strong support for an immediate ceasefire and the expansion of humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza, especially targeting the needs of women and children affected by the daily bombings.

Additionally, about a month ago, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) for the Al-Rasheed Street Massacre in Gaza, blocking the widespread call for accountability.

This follows another instance where the US vetoed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, marking its third such veto related to this occupation.

With Jamaica's recognition, the number of countries that acknowledge the State of Palestine now totals 140, where it was around 100 countries recognizing it by the early 2010s.
