Wednesday, the Amman Criminal Magistrate Court handed down a verdict against a prime suspect for attacking a mosque's imam in Amman with a razor. He was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay legal expenses of JD 80.
Judge Attiya Al-Saud's panel, specialized in cases of violence and intimidation, found the defendant guilty of the charge of using force against a person, threatening violence with the intent to intimidate and harm, violating Article 415/1/B of the Penal Code.
The court established that the 24-year-old defendant, a blacksmith with a criminal record, had committed several offenses related to honor and morals, including theft, indecent assault, and public indecency. He had previously been subjected to eight criminal restrictions.
The incident occurred in January 2024, when an altercation erupted between the defendant and a worshiper after evening prayers. The defendant assaulted and beat the worshiper, and when the mosque's imam intervened, the defendant attacked him with a razor blade, causing a serious injury to his left hand. He also slashed the clothing of an elderly worshiper with the blade before fleeing.
The court concluded that the defendant's actions were aimed at intimidating and harming the victims, attempting to create a lawless environment and impose his own authority.
