The Slovenian government has started its procedures for the official recognition of the State of Palestine, after previously announcing it would do so in March – according to Prime Minister Robert Golob.
“The horrors we see every day in Gaza are inadmissible and must stop,” Golob said on his “X” platform. “I call on Israel to put an immediate end to its attacks on Gaza and to use the negotiating table.”
Slovenia’s step aims to be “an incentive for these negotiations to proceed more quickly” and speed up the dialogue in the United Nations on an immediate ceasefire, Golob added.
The ruling coalition agreed unanimously on this decision, with Golob expressing hope that the recognition would inspire other countries to follow in Slovenia's steps.
Several other European member states are expected to officially recognize the state of Palestine by the end of May - said Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at an earlier time.
