Education Minister Dr. Azmi Mahafzah Saturday revealed the reasons behind the gap in English language proficiency between private and public education in Jordan.
Mahafzah highlighted the disparity in English proficiency, noting that while students in private schools generally master the language, the opposite is true for students in public schools.
Mahafzah identified several major reasons for the decline in students' English skills, including weak English language teachers, overcrowding in public schools, and the limitation of English learning to designated English classes among other factors.
He also emphasized the necessity for teachers not to rely on a single teaching method throughout the educational process during the opening of the "Teaching English in Public Schools" conference.
He stressed that teachers should be capable of integrating various methods and choosing the most suitable ones that align with learners' goals.
It is noted that English language instruction begins from the first grade in basic education, and a sufficient number of classes are allocated weekly. The curricula used are prepared by specialized global companies, according to Mahafzah.
He mentioned that the ministry has issued an international tender to prepare English textbooks from the first grade of basic education to the twelfth grade, following frameworks prepared by specialized technical committees.
The ministry also provided opportunities for English language teachers to receive training through pre-service teacher training programs.
